The Lord has made it very clear that he expects girls and women to dress modestly.
“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” -1 Corinthians 6:19-20
The above scripture applies to more than just how we clothe our bodies, but it is important to consider how the Lord desires us to dress. As Christians, we should represent and glorify the Lord in all we do. This includes the way we dress. The Lord does not want us revealing our bodies to the world. We are not temple prostitutes in Babylon. We are daughters of an Almighty God. There are certain parts of our bodies that should remain for our husband’s eyes only. Here are some simple tips to follow as we try to glorify the Lord in all things:
–We should avoid skin-tight clothing. Clothing that is so tight that everyone is able to see the exact outline of your naked body does not glorify the Lord. God made coats of skins and clothed both Adam and Eve for a reason (Genesis 3:21).
–As women, there are going to be curves that we cannot hide, and this is okay. God made our bodies in a way that is pleasing to our husbands. We should do our best to cover those curves the best we can when we are out in the world. Some women have curves that are larger than most, and it may be difficult to find articles of clothing to keep certain curves fully covered. Do your best.
–Dressing modestly does not mean we need to dress frumpy, unless this is how you’re most comfortable. Slightly loose fitting but feminine clothing can be both lovely and respectful to your husband and to the Lord.
–Pay attention to your hemline! Women should not be wearing dresses and skirts that fall just below our crotch. One small gust of wind and everyone will see what only your husband and ob-gyn/midwife should see. Avoid this embarrassing mishap by wearing dresses and skirts that fall closer to the knee, and remember the length you see in the front is not always the same length in the back. If you have an otherwise modest dress that is a bit too short, throw a pair of leggings or thick tights on underneath! But remember, leggings are not pants.
–Be sure your undergarments are completely covered by your clothing. While it is simply an article of clothing, your lacy or cotton undergarments should still be for your husbands eyes only.
It is wonderful to feel comfortable and confident in your body, but remember whose eyes the Lord has intended your body to be for.
Modesty is beautiful.
